Sugarcane has always been the largest agricultural development in Mauritius – until now, that is.
From sugar to rice
With the end of guaranteed price and quota-free access for Mauritian-produced sugar to the EU, many smallholders were stuck with uneconomical sugar cane crops. Contract farming, however, provides the means to shift to rice production instead. Rice is the most important staple food in Mauritius but 100% has always been imported.
Our investment in local production of high quality rice contributes to Mauritius’ food security, and helps improve farmers' livelihoods. Rice Outgrower Scheme
Our Rice Outgrower Scheme helps local smallholder farms shift from sugarcane production to rice production. We provide expertise, equipment and support and guarantee farmers a fair price for their harvest. We get fantastic produce and they get a good return. Everyone’s happy!
